Semco Maritime and the SDGs

Our sustainability strategy is actively aligned to seven of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that we have identified as most relevant for our company and industry.

Our decarbonisation efforts support the following SDGs:

SDG #7: Affordable and clean energy

Our aspiration is to help meet the world’s growing energy demand in a safe and sustainable way. We have the experience and expertise to play an important role to play in the green energy transition and we want to make a real difference. Therefore, it is natural a natural fit for our company to contribute to SDG #7, which aims to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”.

In the short to medium-term future, renewable energy is not sufficient to ensure reliable energy access for everyone. For this reason, we do not see Oil and Gas as contradictory to sustainability. For now, Oil and Gas needs to be included in the transition to a sustainable energy future.

Examples of how we are contributing to SDG #7, include supporting the increase of renewable energy in the global energy mix, through the installation, transmission, and integration of renewable power from offshore substations.

SDG #13: Climate action

Reducing carbon emissions is crucial in our shared efforts to avoid catastrophic climate change. It is our belief that we have an obligation and a responsibility to take urgent action together with our industry colleagues and the global community. Therefore, we are committed to supporting SDG #13 which aims to “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy”.

That is why decarbonisation is the top priority of our sustainability strategy. We have defined an ambitious roadmap that will help us achieve climate neutrality for our own operations and in our supply chain.

Besides striving to become carbon neutral, we also contribute actively to SDG #13 through digitalisation projects and through initiatives such as carbon capture storage.

SDG #8: Decent work and economic growth

As an international company operating in multiple geographical locations, we are committed to being a responsible and ethical employer. That’s why we are aligned with SDG #8, which aims to “promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.”

Semco Maritime has been a member of the UN Global Compact since 2007 and its 10 principles (related to Human Rights, Labour Rights, Environment and Anti-Corruption) frame our business practices and Code of Conduct.

SDG #9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure

We recognise that it is important for industrial processes and infrastructure to develop in ways that are positive for the environment, or at the very least, reduce negative impacts. That is why we are aligned with SDG #9 which aims to “build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.”

Semco Maritime is contributing to SDG #9 by investing in clean and environmentally sound infrastructure for the energy industry. We are committed to improving our industrial processes to be as clean and efficient as possible. We are also actively working on resource efficiency.

SDG #12: Responsible consumption and production

Growing populations and increasing living standards are putting unprecedented pressure on the earth’s resources. We have an obligation to use resources responsibly and an opportunity to make a difference, aligned to SDG #12 which aims to “ensure sustainable consumption and sustainable production patterns.”

We sort and measure waste at recycling stations at all our offices, and we are investigating possibilities to optimising the use and re-use of materials such as steel. Moreover, we are actively working on influencing our supply chain. Our ambition is to have a sustainable supply chain with material inputs that are 100% renewable, recyclable or reusable by 2030.

SDG #5: Gender equality

Gender equality is a human right and according to the United Nations is also a “necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world”. That is why we support SDG #5, which aims to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.”

We are contributing to SDG #5 through our diversity, equality and inclusion HR policy. Semco Maritime has committed to the Gender Diversity Pledge (created by the Danish Confederation of Industry), which means we have a goal of having 40% female employees in management positions by 2030.

SDG #14: Life below water

As a company centred around offshore activities, the ocean is part of our identity, it’s important to us and we want to protect it. That is why are aligned with SDG #14, with aims to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.”

We use efficient transport planning to minimise trips to and from offshore sites reducing any negative impacts on the ocean. We conduct all offshore activities with the highest industrial and safety standards to minimise any risk of pollution or harm to the ocean.
