Location: Great Belt Bridge, DenmarkPeriod: 2024

In the summer of 2024, the iconic Great Belt Bridge, a critical infrastructure connecting the Danish islands, faced essential maintenance to preserve its integrity and functionality. Semco Maritime was called upon to address a unique engineering challenge at anchor block 18 on the bridge's south side. This project required innovative solutions due to the limitations of conventional methods, prompting the development of a custom scaffolding system.

Challenge

Due to the proximity to the anchor block, conventional methods using a "sledge" for painters to access and treat the bridge for corrosion were not feasible. The project required an innovative approach to build the scaffolding from the road level down approximately 10 meters, meticulously following the bridge's contour.

Solution

Semco Maritime engineers designed a custom scaffolding system that extended from the roadway, securely anchored to the bridge's railing. This scaffolding spanned under the bridge, reaching across to the opposite side (south side), enabling painters to sand and paint all the critical areas prone to corrosion. The structure was supported by chains hung from eyebolts, which were fixed into the bridge structure itself, ensuring stability and safety.

Solution

This project not only ensured the longevity of the bridge but also demonstrated Semco Maritime's capability to deliver bespoke engineering solutions in complex environments.
